Teltonika RUTC54

The Teltonika RUTC54 is a global 5G edge router for centrally managed industrial and distributed networks. It runs Docker containers directly on the device, so you can host edge applications close to your equipment and cut dependency on cloud connectivity. A Telit global 5G modem delivers Sub-6 GHz speeds up to 3.4 Gbps down, with 4G LTE Cat 19 fallback. Dual SIM plus integrated eSIM handle carrier failover, and dual-band Wi-Fi 6 provides high-throughput local access. RutOS, RMS remote management and TPM 2.0 give you the tools to deploy and secure fleets at scale.

Key features

  • Global 5G: Telit Sub-6 GHz modem, SA and NSA, up to 3.4 Gbps down (4×4 MIMO) and 900 Mbps up (2×2 MIMO).
  • 4G fallback: LTE Cat 19 up to 1.6 Gbps down, Cat 18 up to 211 Mbps up.
  • Docker support: run isolated containers and microservices on the router itself.
  • Wi-Fi 6: dual-band 802.11ax, up to 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz, MU-MIMO, up to 512 clients.
  • Dual SIM and eSIM: two Mini SIM slots plus integrated eSIM, with configurable auto-failover.
  • Gigabit Ethernet: 5 x RJ45 ports, 1 x WAN (configurable as LAN) and 4 x LAN.
  • Edge-grade hardware: dual-core Arm Cortex-A53 at 1.3 GHz, 1 GB DDR4 RAM, 8 GB eMMC flash.
  • GNSS positioning: GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo and QZSS, with geofencing and NTRIP.
  • Security: TPM 2.0, full RutOS firewall, and a VPN suite including OpenVPN, IPsec, WireGuard and ZeroTier.
  • Industrial build: anodised aluminium housing, DIN rail or wall mount, -40 to 75 degrees C, passive PoE on LAN1.

What is the RUTC54 used for?

Energy and utilities

Remote substations, BESS installations and distribution assets need dependable telemetry over long distances. The RUTC54 carries DNP3 and Modbus TCP traffic back to SCADA, and DLMS/COSEM support suits smart metering. Dual SIM keeps the link up when one carrier drops.

Industrial automation and edge computing

Run Docker containers on the router to pre-process sensor data, filter Modbus TCP or OPC UA traffic, and forward only what matters. Local edge logic reduces cloud round-trips and keeps a plant running when the WAN is unstable. BacNET support extends this to building management systems.

Distributed retail and enterprise branch

Chain retail and branch sites need one managed connectivity platform. Wi-Fi 6 handles staff and customer devices, dual SIM and eSIM provide carrier resilience, and RMS pushes configuration and firmware to every site at once. Docker can host a local point-of-sale or signage service on site.

EV charge point connectivity

EV charge points need reliable backhaul for OCPP messaging, remote diagnostics and payment authorisation. The RUTC54 keeps charge points online with 5G and dual-SIM failover. A fixed IP SIM allows secure inbound management without exposing the site.

Transport and mobile assets

Built-in GNSS with GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo and QZSS tracks position, and geofencing triggers actions when an asset leaves a defined zone. The -40 to 75 degrees C range suits unheated cabinets and roadside enclosures.

Pro tip

The RUTC54 uses four mobile SMA ports for 4×4 MIMO. To reach the rated 5G throughput, connect an antenna to all four. Running fewer reduces MIMO performance, and running the modem with no mobile antenna can damage it. Inside a metal cabinet, stub antennas lose signal fast, so use external antennas on a short low-loss cable run. Keep the GNSS antenna on its own dedicated SMA port, separate from the four mobile connectors.

Building a resilient cellular connection

Resilience comes from more than one SIM. Fit two SIMs from different mobile networks so the RUTC54 fails over when one operator loses coverage, then add the integrated eSIM as a third profile. Pair the router with a UPS or a battery-backed 9 to 50 V DC supply so it rides through mains interruptions. Use RMS to monitor every site, alert on SIM switches, and push firmware without a visit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the RUTC54 support dual SIM and eSIM?

Yes. It has two Mini SIM (2FF) slots plus an integrated eSIM that holds up to seven profiles. You can set configurable auto-switch rules in RutOS for weak signal, data limits, roaming and connection loss. The eSIM is a hardware feature, not a data plan, so you still need an active eSIM profile from a provider. Read our guide to eSIM routers.

Can I run Docker containers on the RUTC54?

Yes. The RUTC series supports Docker, so you can deploy isolated applications and microservices on the router. With 1 GB RAM and 8 GB eMMC storage, it handles lightweight edge workloads such as protocol conversion, data filtering and local dashboards. See what is Docker for more.

Can I power the RUTC54 with a standard PoE switch?

No. The RUTC54 takes passive PoE on LAN1 only, Mode B, at 9 to 50 V DC. It is not compatible with IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at or 802.3bt. Connecting a standard 48 V active PoE switch or injector can damage the router. Use a matched passive PoE injector, or power it through the 4-pin DC socket.

What SIM do I need for remote access or VPN?

For inbound VPN or remote management, we recommend a fixed IP SIM. Standard SIMs sit behind carrier-grade NAT, which blocks inbound connections. A fixed IP SIM gives the router a reachable address. Learn more in what is a fixed IP SIM.

Does the RUTC54 have GNSS?

Yes. It includes a dedicated GNSS receiver and antenna port supporting GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo and QZSS. You can read coordinates through the WebUI, SMS, RMS or TAVL, and set geofence zones. NTRIP is supported for corrected positioning.
