Applications

5G Backhaul for EV Charge Points

High-power EV chargers generate significant data traffic from transaction processing, energy metering, and OCPP communication. The RUTM30 delivers 5G speeds to support multiple simultaneous charge sessions. Its wide 9-50 V DC input suits the varied power supplies found in charging infrastructure. For remote OCPP server access, a fixed IP SIM card removes the carrier NAT constraint and enables direct inbound connectivity.

Remote SCADA and Utilities Monitoring

The RUTM30 supports Modbus TCP client and server, OPC UA client and server, DNP3 station and outstation, and DLMS/COSEM over TCP – covering the core protocols used in electricity, gas, and water network telemetry. RutOS runs data-to-server pipelines directly, forwarding meter readings and sensor values to head-end systems or cloud platforms over a VPN tunnel. For fleet management across multiple remote sites, Teltonika RMS provides centralised firmware, configuration, and alert management.

Smart City and Transport Infrastructure

Roadside ANPR cameras, traffic signal controllers, and variable message signs all require reliable backhaul with guaranteed uptime. The RUTM30 auto-switches between 5G and 4G SIMs on signal degradation, preventing gaps in coverage during network outages. Its digital inputs can trigger alerts based on external signals – useful for monitoring enclosure tamper events or external power status in roadside cabinets.

Construction Sites and Temporary Deployments

Site offices and temporary welfare facilities need fast, flexible connectivity without fixed-line lead times. The RUTM30 is compact enough to fit in a standard site cabinet, and the 9-50 V input suits generator and solar power sources. Dual SIM keeps the connection live when one carrier has poor coverage at a specific location. The DIN rail mounting kit is available separately if required.

Secure VPN Termination for Industrial Remote Access

Manufacturing and process automation environments need encrypted remote access to PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA workstations. The RUTM30 runs WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPsec, and Tailscale simultaneously. TPM 2.0 provides hardware-bound key storage that protects credentials against extraction from the device. For a detailed breakdown of VPN options on cellular routers, see our VPN on cellular routers guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What 5G bands does the RUTM30 support in the UK?

The RUTM30 EMEA variant (order code RUTM30000200) supports 5G NR bands n1, n3, n5, n7, n8, n20, n28, n38, n40, n41, n75, n76, n77, and n78. UK operators use n77 and n78 (3.5 GHz) as the primary mid-band 5G spectrum. Bands n1, n3, n20, and n28 provide 5G coverage at lower frequencies where mid-band 5G is not yet deployed. 4G LTE fallback covers bands B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20, B28, B32, and B71, which include all major UK 4G bands.

Does the RUTM30 support eSIM?

Yes. The RUTM30 includes a consumer-type eSIM (SGP.22) alongside its two physical Mini SIM (2FF) slots. Up to 7 eSIM profiles can be stored on the device, and profile download and removal are managed via RutOS. The eSIM participates in the same auto-failover logic as the physical SIMs. For background on eSIM in cellular routers, see our eSIM routers explainer.

Does the RUTM30 support dual SIM failover?

Yes. The RUTM30 holds two physical Mini SIM (2FF) cards plus an eSIM. Auto-switch triggers include weak signal, data limit reached, SMS limit, roaming detected, no network, network denied, and data connection failure. Each SIM can be assigned to a different mobile operator, providing network-level diversity. The WAN port and Wi-Fi WAN also participate in the broader network backup and failover system in RutOS.

What is Teltonika RMS and does the RUTM30 support it?

Teltonika RMS (Remote Management System) is a cloud platform for managing Teltonika routers remotely. It provides device monitoring, alert configuration, firmware updates via FOTA, remote CLI access, and configuration push across fleets of devices. The RUTM30 is fully RMS compatible. For full details on what RMS can do, see our Teltonika RMS explainer.

What SIM card do I need for the RUTM30?

The physical SIM slots accept Mini SIM (2FF) format – not Micro or Nano SIM. A standard data SIM from any UK network will work for outbound connectivity, but for applications requiring inbound VPN access or fixed remote access, a fixed IP SIM card is strongly recommended. Standard SIMs sit behind carrier-grade NAT, which blocks inbound connections. Browse all SIM options at our SIM connectivity page.

Does the RUTM30 have RS232 or RS485 serial ports?

No. The RUTM30 does not have RS232 or RS485 serial interfaces. It communicates with Modbus and OPC UA devices over TCP/IP via its Gigabit Ethernet port. For deployments requiring direct serial connectivity to PLCs, meters, or legacy industrial equipment, the Teltonika RUT956 includes both RS232 and RS485 ports alongside 4G LTE Cat 6 connectivity.

What type of antennas are included with the RUTM30?

The RUTM30 is supplied with four compact mobile antennas for 4G and 5G connectivity, each with SMA connectors. It also includes two Wi-Fi antennas with magnetic bases and RP-SMA connectors, ideal for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz operation. These antennas are suitable for most installations, but can be replaced with high-gain options if needed.

How many Physical SIM cards can the RUTM30 use?

It supports two physical SIM cards (dual SIM slots) and also includes eSIM functionality. This gives you flexibility to run multiple networks, configure failover between SIMs, or manage profiles remotely without changing hardware.  To insert physical SIM cards you need to use the hex key to remove the panel and you can then insert the SIM cards – see the SIM slot picture below.
