Teltonika RUT261

The Teltonika RUT261 is a compact 4G LTE Cat 6 industrial router built for space-constrained and embedded installations. It reaches 300 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload through carrier aggregation, which sets it apart from the Cat 4 RUT200 while keeping the same small footprint. RutOS runs the full VPN suite, the industrial protocol stack, and Teltonika RMS support. Two 10/100 Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi 4, and passive PoE input cover core wired and wireless connectivity. The aluminium housing mounts on DIN rail, a wall, or a flat surface.

Key features

  • 4G LTE Cat 6 with carrier aggregation: up to 300 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload across two aggregated bands.
  • Single Mini SIM: one 2FF SIM slot with an external holder on the front panel, accessible without opening the enclosure.
  • Wi-Fi 4 access point and station: 802.11b/g/n on 2.4 GHz for up to 50 clients, with WPA3 support.
  • Two Fast Ethernet ports: one WAN and one LAN at 10/100 Mbps, and the WAN port reconfigures as a second LAN in RutOS.
  • Digital input and output: one of each on the 4-pin power connector for sensor, alarm, and control integration.
  • Passive PoE input: power the router over LAN1 at 9 to 30 V DC using Mode B spare pairs.
  • Full RutOS software: OpenVPN, WireGuard, IPsec, ZeroTier, Modbus TCP, DNP3, OPC UA, DLMS, and MQTT.
  • Teltonika RMS ready: remote monitoring, configuration, firmware updates, and VPN access across every site.
  • Wide power and temperature range: 9 to 30 V DC input with reverse polarity and surge protection, and -40 to 75 degrees C operation.
  • Compact industrial build: 83 x 25 x 74 mm aluminium housing, IP30, mountable on DIN rail, wall, or flat surface.

What is the RUT261 used for?

Smart metering and utilities telemetry

The RUT261 backhauls meter and sensor data over cellular where no fixed line reaches. It speaks DLMS/COSEM, DNP3, and Modbus TCP natively, so it connects to electricity, water, and gas metering equipment without a separate gateway. Data to Server forwards readings to a head-end system or cloud over MQTT or HTTPS.

Remote CCTV and ANPR sites

Compact camera cabinets and roadside ANPR posts need a small router with real uplink speed. Cat 6 carrier aggregation gives the RUT261 enough headroom to push encoded video from a busy site. Pair it with a fixed IP SIM so the NVR or VMS reaches the site directly.

EV charge point connectivity

The RUT261 links charge points back to a management platform over OCPP. Its digital input and output flag door tamper, contactor state, or a local fault to RMS by SMS or email. The wide 9 to 30 V DC input suits kerbside and forecourt power rails.

Industrial automation and SCADA

On a machine skid or in a control cabinet, the RUT261 acts as the cellular WAN for a PLC or RTU. Modbus TCP client and server, OPC UA, and policy-based routing move process data to a SCADA master. VRRP and multi-WAN failover keep the link up when a wired backhaul drops.

Primary or backup connectivity for remote offices

Small branches, kiosks, and temporary sites use the RUT261 as their main link or as automatic failover behind a wired line. RutOS runs OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IPsec for a secure tunnel back to head office. Learn more in our guide to VPN on cellular routers.

Pro tip

Cat 6 depends on carrier aggregation, so both cellular antennas earn their place. Connect an antenna to the MAIN and the AUX SMA ports. MAIN must always carry an antenna, because running the modem without one risks damaging it. AUX drives the second aggregated stream and the 2×2 MIMO gain that moves you toward 300 Mbps. Inside a metal cabinet, stub antennas lose signal fast. Switch to external antennas on a short low-loss cable run, mounted outside the enclosure. That one change often adds several dB and lifts real throughput more than any firmware setting.

Building a resilient cellular connection

The RUT261 carries a single SIM, so build resilience around multi-WAN rather than dual-SIM switching. Set the mobile connection as backup to a wired WAN, or the reverse, and let RutOS fail over on ping loss once configured. A multi-network SIM adds carrier diversity from the one slot, since it selects the strongest available network. Pair the router with a small UPS on the 9 to 30 V DC input to ride out mains dips, then monitor the whole estate through Teltonika RMS for alerts and remote recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Does the RUT261 support dual SIM?

No. The RUT261 has a single Mini SIM slot. For hardware dual-SIM failover between two carriers, step up to the Teltonika RUT901.

What is the difference between the RUT261 and the RUT200?

Both share the same compact housing, single SIM, and Wi-Fi 4. The RUT261 uses a 4G LTE Cat 6 modem for up to 300 Mbps with carrier aggregation, against 150 Mbps Cat 4 on the RUT200. The RUT261 also carries 32 MB of flash against 16 MB. For a full breakdown of the fields, read our explainer on understanding Teltonika router specifications.

What SIM card do I need for the RUT261?

It takes a Mini SIM (2FF), not Micro or Nano. The box includes a SIM adapter kit, so you can step a Micro or Nano SIM up to Mini size. For remote management and inbound VPN, a fixed IP SIM is strongly recommended, since a standard SIM sits behind carrier-grade NAT. See our fixed IP SIM cards and the explainer on what a fixed IP SIM is.

Can I power the RUT261 over PoE?

Yes, but only passive PoE. LAN1 accepts passive PoE at 9 to 30 V DC on Mode B spare pairs. Do not connect an 802.3af, 802.3at, or 802.3bt switch or injector. Those run at 48 V and will damage the router. Use a matched 12 V or 24 V passive PoE injector.

Does the RUT261 support eSIM?

This order code, RUT261AADAA0, is physical SIM only and has no eSIM. It uses the single Mini SIM slot.

What is Teltonika RMS and does the RUT261 support it?

Teltonika RMS is the cloud platform for remote monitoring, configuration, firmware updates, and VPN access. The RUT261 supports it. Read our guide to Teltonika RMS.
