Teltonika RUT281 – Compact Global 4G LTE Cat 4 Router

The Teltonika RUT281 is a compact global LTE Cat 4 router built for fixed industrial and IoT installations where space is limited and global band coverage matters. Powered by a Telit modem supporting 18 LTE bands, 7 UMTS bands, and 4 GSM bands, the RUT281 operates on a single order code across UK, European, US, Australian, and Asia-Pacific networks. It replaces the need for regional hardware variants and simplifies stock management for multi-country deployments.

At 83 x 25 x 74 mm and 130 grams, the RUT281 fits inside enclosures, equipment cabinets, and behind panels where a larger router simply won’t go. Physical SIM and eSIM connectivity, WAN failover, passive PoE input, and the full RutOS software stack – including Modbus TCP, OPC UA, DNP3, and a comprehensive VPN suite – make it a serious industrial router in the smallest possible footprint. It runs the same RutOS platform used across the entire Teltonika range, and it is fully compatible with Teltonika RMS for remote management at scale.

What the RUT281 Is Used For

CCTV and Remote Video Surveillance

The RUT281 provides reliable 4G backhaul for CCTV cameras and NVRs at locations without fixed broadband. Its compact form factor fits inside camera housings, street furniture, and equipment cabinets. Passive PoE input means it can draw power from the same cable run as the camera, keeping installations clean and simple.

Car Park Payment Terminals and Access Control

Payment terminals, barrier controllers, and building access systems need a compact, always-on cellular connection. The RUT281’s slim 25 mm depth means it fits inside standard DIN rail enclosures alongside the terminal hardware. The digital input and output handle barrier trigger signals and alarm outputs without additional I/O expanders.

Digital Signage and Vending Machine Connectivity

Vending machines and digital signage displays need reliable cellular connectivity for content updates, transaction processing, and remote diagnostics. The RUT281 connects via Ethernet to the display or machine controller. WAN failover between SIM and PoE WAN keeps the connection up through network outages.

Environmental and Industrial Sensor Backhaul

Environmental monitoring systems – air quality sensors, flood gauges, weather stations, and building management inputs – often transmit small data packets from locations without fixed infrastructure. The RUT281 handles cellular backhaul for these sensors, reporting data over MQTT, HTTP, or Modbus TCP to cloud platforms and SCADA systems.

Multi-Country IoT Rollouts

The 18-band Telit modem eliminates the regional ordering and stock complexity that comes with single-market hardware. A UK distributor rolling out IoT devices across European and North American sites can use one RUT281 order code for the entire project. Band 28 adds coverage in Australia, New Zealand, and APT 700 markets across Asia-Pacific.

Smart Metering and Utility Data Collection

Gas, water, and electricity meters in locations without fixed broadband can use the RUT281 as a 4G data concentrator. It connects to meter pulse outputs via the digital input, forwards consumption data over cellular using DLMS/COSEM or Modbus TCP, and handles connection failover automatically if the primary network goes down.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SIM card do I need for the Teltonika RUT281?

The RUT281 takes a standard Mini SIM (2FF). For UK deployments, a fixed IP SIM card gives you a static IP address for VPN remote access, CCTV monitoring, and SCADA connectivity. For roaming deployments across multiple countries, a multi-network roaming SIM covers UK, EU, and international networks from a single card. We supply both types with every router – see our IoT SIM card range or our fixed IP SIM cards for details. The RUT281 also includes an eSIM slot, so profiles can be provisioned remotely without physically inserting a SIM card.

Does the RUT281 support eSIM?

Yes. The RUT281 includes a consumer eSIM alongside the physical SIM slot. The eSIM supports up to 7 downloadable profiles and can be provisioned remotely using the RutOS WebUI or Teltonika RMS. eSIM bootstrap allows you to ship a router to site without a physical SIM and activate connectivity over the air – useful for deployments where on-site access is expensive or difficult. Note that eSIM functionality requires an RUT281 eSIM variant (order code RUT281002000 for the UK PSU version includes eSIM as standard on current production).

What is Teltonika RMS and does the RUT281 support it?

Teltonika RMS (Remote Management System) is a cloud-based platform for managing Teltonika devices at scale. It gives you remote access to each router’s WebUI, over-the-air firmware updates, configuration push to multiple devices simultaneously, VPN hub creation, and live signal and status monitoring. The RUT281 is fully RMS compatible. RMS operates on a credit model – we supply RMS credits alongside routers for managed deployments. Contact us on 0300 124 6181 to discuss RMS licensing for your project.

What is the difference between the RUT281 and the RUT241?

The RUT281 is the direct successor to the RUT241 with the same 83 x 25 x 74 mm footprint and the same two-port Ethernet layout – it is a physical drop-in replacement. The key differences are: the RUT281 uses a global Telit modem covering 18 LTE bands versus the regional modem in the RUT241; the RUT281 adds eSIM with up to 7 profiles; and the full industrial protocol stack (Modbus TCP, OPC UA, DNP3, DLMS/COSEM) is included as standard. The trade-offs are a lower maximum 3G speed (21 Mbps versus 42 Mbps on the RUT241) and a slightly lower upper operating temperature (65 degrees C versus 75 degrees C). For 4G-primary deployments in standard industrial environments, neither difference is likely to matter.

Can I use the RUT281 outdoors?

The RUT281 is rated IP30, which means it is not weatherproof and should not be installed outdoors without an enclosure. For outdoor deployments, mount it inside an IP65 or IP67 rated enclosure. The -40 to +65 degrees C operating temperature covers most outdoor conditions in the UK and Northern Europe. Pair it with an external 4G antenna mounted outside the enclosure via SMA cable for best signal performance – the supplied stub antennas are for indoor use only. We can advise on suitable enclosures and external antennas for your site.

What VPN protocols does the RUT281 support?

RutOS on the RUT281 supports OpenVPN, WireGuard, IPsec (IKEv1 and IKEv2), PPTP, L2TP, and GRE tunnelling as standard. No additional licence is required. For CCTV monitoring and remote access deployments, a fixed IP SIM paired with OpenVPN or WireGuard gives you a secure tunnel back to your monitoring station. If you are connecting into an existing Cisco or Juniper VPN infrastructure, the IPsec client handles that without additional configuration tools.

Related Products and Further Reading

The RUT281 is part of the Teltonika 4G router range at routerstore.com. If you need dual physical SIM slots and four Ethernet ports, the Teltonika RUT981 is the next step up in the global series. For deployments requiring RS485 serial ports, GNSS, and full industrial I/O, the Teltonika RUT986 is the industrial gateway variant. For cellular signal assessment before installation, our 4G signal analysers help identify the best antenna position and network before committing to a fixed mount. The RUT281 ships with basic stub antennas – for any external or enclosure-mounted installation, pair it with an antenna from our 4G antenna range, including panel, dome, and omni options from Poynting and Panorama. For SIM connectivity, our fixed IP SIM cards provide a static IP address for remote access, CCTV monitoring, and VPN termination, and our roaming SIM cards cover multi-network UK and international deployments.
